Once we had all conducted our own research into the overall style of Baroque interiors and what we wanted to achieve, we were split into pairs and given a piece of the interior to look at to create a mood board. Me and Nicole were given furniture to look at. We decided that the sofa where Ivan died would be the most important and iconic piece of furniture so we focussed on that aspect and researched into Baroque sofas.
We found that the feet on Baroque furniture were very different to contemporary furniture, they were very stylistic and often contained animal foot motifs. Of these we found the ball and claw foot, the French scroll foot and the Lion's paw foot.
Own drawings of different feet found through research.
(Figure 7) This Baroque sofa is a chaise longues. These sofas were elegant and somewhat feminine.

(Figure 9) Gold patterned fabric used on the sofas with embellishments bordering both the top and bottom of the frames. We found that the sofa colours were coherent to the surrounding colour in the room. We also found that cushions appeared on some sofas and not others, this would have to be looked into further when the sofa would be made.

(Figure 10) Side view of the sofa - The frame is delicately carved into with curved shapes and twists. The back of the sofa's we found that the more upholstered looking ones leaned back and the less upholstered ones were very upright.
I had the idea that since we were creating a room that had to portray psychological horror and the sofa in which he died would be shrouded with death that we could include that in the motifs used on the sofa. I thought that since on the feet claws were used we could incorporate the hand-like claw on the arms of the sofa. This would relate to the idea of death trying to grab him whilst keeping within the symbolic Baroque style.

(Figure 11) This is a drawing that Nicole did for our mood board using my idea of the hands on the sofa. She has drawn a sofa with a very deep seat to it to make it appear that Ivan is almost getting taken in or swallowed by it, relating back to the black sack.

(Figure 12) Another image of Nicole's used on our moodboard - We decided that the hands could also be a motif on the top of the sofa.

(Figure13) Here we have shown a weeping willow branch going along the top of the sofa, this would be carved in. We found that the willow had many interpretations within culture.
Traditionally the weeping willow has been associated with both death and fertility. In Athens, women that were infertile were told to place willow branches in their beds.
It was a common custom in the middle ages and after to plant a willow tree near graves and to put a willow branch in each coffin.
